HCOM 346: African American Life/ History
Course description
An introduction to the historical and cultural narratives that shape African American identities and experiences. The course focuses on such themes as African roots of African-American culture, freedom and inequality, black folklore and artistic expressions, migration, family and kinship, community and identity.
HCOM 346 helped me to complete my MLO 4 requirement. In this course, I learned about the culture of the African Americans who were brought to the United States and they were enslaved. I read several books like Drylongso by John Langston, The Argument Culture by Deborah Tamen and other. These books were about the African Americans experiences. The books said that they had bad treatment that was brutal and rebellion that they had against white people. In addition, in this class, I learned the struggle they had for freedom. Likewise, I learned about his culture, previously they had their own music and rituals to their own religion, rather then to their culture. It was also discussed that the propaganda African society was labeled as was the worst people as criminals to which the conclusion was reached that even though the law protects them, they go through discrimination. To conclude, with the passage of time the African Americans have been accepted although they still have problems of discrimination.
